DH9 with 240 hp BHP engine

Airco D.H.9

role : light bomber

importance : ****

first flight : operational : December 1917

country : United-Kingdom

design :

production : 6295 aircraft

general information :

The D.H.9 was developed from the D.H.4. The fuel tank was now placed before the pilot so he and the gunner could now be seated closer together for better co-operation. The D.H.9 was much used but due to engine problems performance were inferior to that of the D.H.4 it replaced ! The airframe was good with pleasant handling qualities. Production of the excellent Rolls Royce Eagle were falling far short of demand. The Puma engine was intended for mass production and the DH9 was designed to take this engine. Due to engine failure the intended 300 hp output was de-

rated to 230 hp. With bombload the ceiling was limited to 3658m. At this height it could be easily intercepted by German fighters.

Puma engine was directly derived from the 230 hp BHP engine

Gap : 1.67 m chord : 1.67 m, airscrew diam : 2.90 m pitch : 2.10 m > met 240 hp BHP engine at 1525 rpm

Total area of tail (empennage) : 7.53 m2 area of elevators : 1.11 m2 area of rudder : 1.27 m2 area of fin : 0.50 m2 tank capacity : 74 gallon = 336 litre.

Bombs could be carried under the wing and under the fuselage, typical loads being two 104 kg bombs or four 51 kg bombs. There was also possibility to carry smaller bombs internally.
